Why SUNY Started
A simple question exposed a larger problem.
In a conversation with an independent contractor, Mauricio Torres asked why they were recording work information in the Notes app on their phone. The worker explained that logging a basic entry took roughly 45 to 60 seconds. They had tried other apps, but many felt too complicated or requested more tax and identifying information than they wanted to provide.
Torres began asking other 1099 workers about the same problem. Nine out of ten workers in those early conversations described similar friction. These were informal founder conversations, not a scientific survey. The repeated response led Torres to research the broader market serving 1099 and hybrid workers.
His research led him to believe many existing products were designed around more complex financial and tax workflows rather than the simpler daily needs he was hearing from independent workers. Torres saw an opportunity to start with three basic actions: Log Pay. Log Spend. Log Mileage. Keep work and money organized in one place.
SUNY grew from the belief that work-and-money software should fit the way people already work.
