SUNY — 1099 and W-2 financial tracking app

Effective: August 1, 2026

⚠️ SUNY does not provide professional tax, legal, investment, or financial advice. All calculations and content are informational only. Consult a licensed CPA or professional before filing or making financial decisions.

1. Tax estimates

Tax estimates within SUNY are calculated from the entries you input and IRS-published rates. They are for planning and educational purposes only.

Constants used for tax year 2026: standard business mileage rate of $0.725 per mile (January 1–June 30, 2026) and $0.76 per mile (July 1–December 31, 2026); self-employment tax rate of 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) applied to 92.35% of net self-employment income; default federal set-aside estimate of 25%. The 25% figure is an adjustable planning estimate, not a prediction of your tax liability or a recommended reserve percentage for every worker. Actual tax needs vary based on net self-employment income, W-2 withholding, filing status, household income, credits, state taxes, and other tax circumstances.

Your actual tax liability depends on your complete financial situation, deductions, credits, and state rules. SUNY does not file or transmit tax returns.

2. No professional advice

SUNY is an organization and education tool for independent workers. Nothing inside the app — including the AI assistant, articles, insights, or exports — constitutes professional tax, legal, accounting, investment, or financial advice. Before filing a return or making a financial decision, verify with a licensed CPA, attorney, or other appropriate professional.

3. Data sources

Calculations use IRS-published rates and state tax authority rates available at the time of app publication. Values may change; consult irs.gov and your state tax authority for current figures.

Estimates are approximations only. SUNY does not connect to your bank, employer, or payroll platform, and does not import transactions automatically.

4. Rewards — no monetary value

  • Hustle Points. Hustle Points are an in-app engagement score. They cannot be redeemed for cash, gift cards, discounts, products, services, or partner benefits. They are non-transferable, cannot be sold, and cannot be withdrawn.
  • Referral credits and free months. Referral credits and free-month credits apply only to your own SUNY+ subscription. They cannot be redeemed for cash and cannot be transferred to another account.
  • See the full Rewards & Disclosures FAQ in-app at /rewards-faq.

5. Receipt processing (OCR)

When you scan a receipt, the image is sent to an AI service through the Lovable AI Gateway using Google's Gemini model, solely to read the values. SUNY does not store the image. Only the extracted values — amount, date, merchant, category — are saved as an expense entry you can edit or delete. If you would rather not send an image, every field can be entered by hand.

6. Location and GPS mileage

SUNY does not collect location at launch or passively in the background. Precise location is collected only during a trip you start on the Mileage screen. An optional setting keeps GPS tracking alive while the app is backgrounded during an active trip; it is off by default, requires your explicit opt-in, shows hourly reminders, and can be turned off at any time.

7. Subscriptions

Paid SUNY+ subscriptions purchased in the mobile app are processed by Apple or Google through your App Store or Google Play account. SUNY never receives or stores your payment card details. You may cancel at any time through your App Store or Google Play subscription settings.

8. AI and accuracy

SUNY's AI assistant can make mistakes. Its responses are general guidance only and do not replace professional advice. Verify any number, legal citation, or tax guidance with an official source (irs.gov, your state tax authority) or a licensed professional before acting.
